HCL - Overview

The 14th HCL International Bridge Championship will be held at New Delhi, from 19th October to 23rd October 2016, JW Marriott Hotel, New Delhi Aerocity. The championship will have the pleasure of announcing:

  • The 'Naresh Tandan Trophy' for the winners of Team of Four Gold event
  • The 'Mohini Tandan Trophy' for the winners of Team of Four Silver event
  • The 'Neena Bonarji Trophy' for the winners of Open Pairs event

FORMAT

FORMAT
  • Team of Four Gold Event is open to all. The qualifying round consists of Swiss League of 10 Rounds of 12 Boards each on first two days. The top 8/12/16 teams after Swiss League will advance to the next stage depending on total number of teams. In case 12/16 teams qualify, the teams will be divided into two groups. They will play an all-play-all super league within their own group and top 2 teams from each group will qualify for semi-finals. The knock-out matches (Semi-Finals and Final) will be played over 4 sessions of 14 Boards each. The play-off for 3rd position will be played over 3 sessions of 14 Boards each.
  • Team of Four Silver Event is open to Indian Bridge players (participation of Foreign teams in this event is subject to clearance by Technical Committee). There can be no more than two National Masters (according to BFI master point scheme) ranked players in a team and they should not play together. The qualifying round is played in two stages. There will be 7 rounds of Swiss League of 8 Boards each on the first day. After 7 rounds, the Top 24 teams will be divided into 3 groups of 8 teams each. On the second day, each group will play an all-play-all super league within their group and the top 2 teams from each group will qualify for super league-2. The remaining teams ranked 25 onwards will continue to play another 7 rounds of swiss league and the top 2 teams will qualify for super league-2 along with other six teams. Super League-2 will be an all-play-all league of 7 rounds of 8 boards each, after which top 4 teams will qualify for semi-finals. The Semi-Finals and Final will be played over 4 sessions of 14 Boards each. The play-off for 3rd position will be played over 3 sessions of 14 Boards each.
  • Swiss Pairs Event is a one day event for non-qualifiers of team of four events. However pairs who have not played in team events can also participate. Swiss Pairs event will be played over 9 Rounds of 6 Boards each.
  • Open Pairs Event is a match pointed pairs event. The elimination round consists of 3 sessions of 18 Boards each. Top 50 pairs along with 2 sponsored pairs will qualify for the final. The Open Pairs Final will be a 52 Pairs and 50 Boards Final played over two sessions. The pairs will be divided in two sections and each pair plays every other pair in its own section.
  • IMP Pairs Event is a one day event for non-qualifiers of open pairs event. It will be played over two sessions of 24 Boards each.

The tournament will follow the WBF 2007 Laws of Duplicate Bridge as amended from time to time. The Applicable Supplemental Conditions of Contest shall be circulated before the start of the tournament.

WBF system policy shall be followed throughout the tournament. The Brown Sticker Conventions are not allowed in the Swiss League/Super League Stage of Team of Four Event and in Elimination Stage of Pairs events. The pairs employing Brown Sticker Conventions in the knock-out stage of Team Events must submit their convention with written defense to the CTD before the start of the last round of Swiss/Super League stage. Multi 2D is allowed, provided a written defense against the convention is provided to the opponents before the start of the round.

Psyche of a conventional bid is not permitted at any stage of any event and Psyches are not permitted during Swiss/Super Leagues of Team of Four Silver Event & Elimination round of Open Pairs event.

Important Notes

Systems
  • Sponsor will have a quota of two Pairs, directly seeded to the Pairs Final.
  • Participating players are required to take their seats as per the program; failure to do so will result in penalty.
  • Displaying of properly filled convention cards at the table is compulsory. Copies of blank convention cards will be made available at the venue.
  • Players will be provided with lunch at the venue. Tea /coffee and snacks will be served during scheduled tea breaks.
  • Players are requested not to bring along their tea/coffee/cold drinks/lunch at the playing arena.

  • The organizing committee has the right to change the tournament schedule and format, if required.
  • Mobile phones are strictly prohibited in the playing area. Random search will be done.
